Baeyer-Villiger Oxidation


Insertion of an O next to a carbonyl group by per-acids.
Which is the moving group is depending on the structure of both groups.
The order is (more or less): tert ~> H > Ph/Ar ~ sek > prim > -Me
R-C(O)C-R' + R''CO3 -> R-C(O)C-O-R' + R''-CO2H
m-Chloroperbenzoic acid is usually used because it is crystalline and can be used in stoichiometric amounts.
